![]() In a critique of the cultural implications of the perseverance of a graphic animation style that had emerged with the earliest of animated films Anna Munster suggests that the graphic flatness reflects a view of the world dissociated with concern for reality.īy stripping the volume away from animated characters’ bodies, the organicism depreciated and direct abject confrontation with bodily functions could be avoided, returning animation to an emphasis on what Norman Klein has called ‘graphic narrative’. Elementary foreshortening is implemented, along with other depth cues, for example: overlapping, diminishing size, vertical location, convergence, textural changes, aerial perspective and zones of depth (these have been discussed in Lecture 4). This means that the characters retain flat and two dimensional presences. In general, concessions to form amount to implementation of a three-tone range that includes a band of highlight and a band of shadow, thus creating a suggestion of tonal depth. Stylistically, The Simpsons cartoons are drawn using line to create outline shapes with flat, colour filled areas. In addition The Simpsons’ writers employ all of the tropes discussed in Lecture 8 including: analogy and metaphor metonymy hyperbole strange juxtapositions and combinations symbolism and allegory personification typology and, allusion. the couch, the blackboard, itchy & scratchy) repetition of popular gag formats and segments (e.g.in-jokes for cult and specialist genre audiences, self-referential gags and references to other texts.satire of socio-cultural double-standards and ironies.empathy for ‘common’ people (typically the largest subset in today’s consumer society – the ‘upper-lower-middle class’).nobody-spared, no-holds-barred, irreverent satirical attitude.consistent characterisation and sympathetic portrayal of character’s emotional responses.A large part of its generation-spanning success can be attributed to its adherence to all of the finest of the long-established traditions of lampooning, caricature, cartooning and comicry. This week we also take a look at the pioneering work of Dr Stuart Campbell (aka Sutu) in the emergent fields of interactive comic book, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR).Įver since Fox commissioned the first series from Matt Groening in 1989 the animated cartoon The Simpsons has become a staple in the TV-watching diet of families throughout the Western world. What this means is that the virtualisation of the graphic processes has reached a stage where the work can flow easily between spaces and places and it can readily be electronically shared. Some enable the incorporation of 3-D modeling formats too and the 3-D programs can utilise the 2-D formats. ![]() Most computer graphic software these days enables one to work with both of these modes and indeed to work interchangeably between them. There have emerged two fundamental image formats for working with 2-D images: vector and raster. The programs commonly used for creating and synthesising images make use of a wide range of software tools, many of which relate to traditional manual tools and practices. We take a retrospective look at image highlights from the early days of emergence of computer imaging and we study how the development of drawing and image manipulation software virtualised the tools, practices and techniques not only of artists and photographers but also of typesetters and graphic reproducers. We reflect on this as being a milestone moment for animation, being symbolic of the coming of age of computer-based modeling and a revisiting of the Renaissance representational endeavour in art through its ratification of Cartesian 3-D drawing space. We take a look at a historic episode of The Simpsons where Homer transforms from a 2-D character to a 3-D character. ![]() This week's theme is drawing in the context of computer generated imaging. Clement of Alexandria and likewise Tertullian, as early as the end of the 2nd century, expressly mention the Canonical Hours of Terce, Sext, and Nones, as specially set apart for prayer. The Didache prescribed prayer thrice each day, without, however, fixing the hours. The most ancient testimony refers to this custom of Terce, Sext, and Nones, for instance Tertullian, Clement of Alexandria, the Canons of Hippolytus, and even the Didache ("Teaching of the Apostles"). But, as a rule, it is the death of Christ that is commemorated at the Hour of Nones. John Cassian, who adopts the Cyprian interpretation for Terce and Sext, sees in the Hour of Nones the descent of Christ into hell. Basil merely recalls that it was at the ninth hour that the Apostles Peter and John were wont to go to the Temple to pray. Peter, the reception of the Gentiles into the Church, or yet again by the crucifixion of Christ Nones by the death of Christ. He adds that these hours already consecrated to prayer under the Old Dispensation have been sanctified in the New Testament by great mysteries-Terce by the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles Sext by the prayers of St. Cyprian sees in the hours of Terce, Sext and Nones, which come after a lapse of three hours, an allusion to the Trinity. The Apostles continued to frequent the Temple at the customary hours of prayer (Acts 3:1): "Now Peter and John went up into the temple at the ninth hour of prayer." Īt an early date mystical reasons for the division of the day were sought. In addition to Morning and Evening Prayer to accompany the sacrifices, there was prayer at the Third, Sixth and Ninth Hours of the day. ![]() This division of the day was in vogue also among the Jews, from whom the Church borrowed it. Among the ancients the hour of Nones was regarded as the close of the day's business and the time for the baths and supper. According to an Ancient Greek and Roman custom, the day was, like the night, divided into four parts, each consisting of three hours. ![]() Deliveroo’s much-hyped stock market flotation last month dominated headlines, as did the rapid tumble in its share price after major institutional investors opted to steer clear. If you live in one of the 150 British towns and cities now served by Deliveroo, the firm’s turquoise logo probably feels ubiquitous these days: plastered on stickers inside takeaway windows, bobbing on the backs of cyclists and motorbike riders, flashing across television sets during the evening news. “What do you think is going on in there?” he asked fellow restaurateurs. Word was that Deliveroo had started building its own kitchens on a piece of wasteland up the road, just the other side of Hornsey railway line the newly installed units had no windows, people said, and a security guard was posted on the door. That was when strange rumours first began swirling around the local restaurant scene. “It just felt like Deliveroo were taking in money and information from every angle, while other people – us at the restaurant, the drivers who came to pick up the orders – did all the work,” he says. And, as time went by, Deliveroo was learning more and more about his clientele, while his customers grew ever more remote from him. ![]() When things went awry, such as a delivery driver not turning up or someone complaining about a missing item, he could be hit with a financial penalty, and it was almost impossible to reach a human being at Deliveroo to resolve it. The more Kurt thought about it, the more he wondered what his restaurant was supposed to be gaining from this arrangement. That went down badly with previously loyal customers who were presented with a vast number of often heavily discounted competitors when using the app. It meant anyone buying his huge adana kofte or mixed shish kebabs through the Deliveroo app was in effect paying three surcharges for the convenience, as Deliveroo was also charging them a delivery and service fee. Kurt, a gregarious, bearded man in his early 40s, who left his central Anatolian home town in 1995 and used his love of food to build a new life in the UK, ran the numbers: with Deliveroo’s commission amounting to 35% plus VAT on every order, he was forced to increase his prices to avoid losing money on each sale. The sense that something was wrong dawned gradually. I didn’t think there was a downside.” Within a few days of signing a contract with the company, a shiny new tablet computer arrived on which orders placed via Deliveroo appeared out of the ether with a satisfying ping. “We wanted more customers and money coming in and Deliveroo seemed to offer that. ![]() “Life as a small, independent restaurant is hard and the profit margins are slim,” says Hüseyin Kurt, Shukran’s owner. S hukran Best Kebab – the finest Turkish restaurant in the Seven Sisters area of north London, according to some people (although it is surrounded by fierce rivals to the throne) – joined Deliveroo two years ago, and back then it seemed like a no-brainer. ![]() ![]() It’s believed that this occurs to help protect the eyes from being injured accidentally by underwater branches and the like, and makes sense given that the platypus feeds mainly at night and often in murky water. Interestingly, the platypus rarely uses sight when underwater – its eyes normally close automatically as soon as it dives. The lens is fairly flat at the front and much more curved at the back, like those found in otters and sea lions. Its structure is mostly like that of other mammals but has some reptilian features, such as double retinal cone cells used to see colour. The platypus’s eye is small (6 millimetres in diameter) and has a round pupil. Photo courtesy of Ann Killeen (right), other photo: APC Because electricity travels so rapidly through water, the tail flick of a shrimp is recorded a fraction of an instant earlier by bill electroreceptors as compared to push rods, making it possible for a platypus to judge the distance to its prey. The bill surface is also thickly dotted with electroreceptors (technically known as “sensory mucous glands”) that are able to register the tiny amounts of electricity generated when the muscles of edible aquatic invertebrates contract. Nerves are activated when the tip of a push rod receptor is displaced by as little as 20 microns (0.00002 metre), which means that a platypus can detect movement by prey such as a freshwater shrimp from a distance of 15-20 centimetres, simply by sensing associated water movement. The receptors known as “push rods” are sensitive to touch or pressure. The skin of the bill contains tens of thousands of specialised sensory receptors that provide a platypus with the information it needs to navigate underwater and capture its prey. The bill’s upper surface is uniformly dark grey its lower surface can either be uniformly grey or quite mottled. The platypus’s bill is covered by smooth skin with a soft, suede-like texture and (unlike a duck’s bill) is quite pliable and fleshy around the edges. The extra skin folds under the foot when an animal leaves the water, making it easier to walk or to dig using the sturdy front claws. The front foot ends in a broad expanse of skin that unfurls in the water to form a large and efficient paddle (below). The platypus’s hind foot is equipped with sharp, curved claws that are used like a comb to groom the fur (as shown at left). ![]() The light-coloured patches make it look as if the eyes remain open, reducing the risk of attack by a predator (as shown above). The fur is dark brown above (except for a small light-coloured patch of fur next to each eye) and creamy white below (sometimes tinged rusty red or brassy yellow). The eyes and ears are both located in a muscular groove that normally pinches shut when a platypus dives. The platypus has a streamlined body and a superficially duck-like bill. A long-term study near Melbourne found that 40% of adults were last captured when 3-5 years old, 36% when 6-8 years old and 24% when 9 or more years old. This 2001 re-release benefits from digital remastering and the crystalline sound gives these classic songs a new life that sound as though they could have been recorded yesterday. It was Al DeLory that worked with him to produce that beguiling country pop sound that sold records by the million. When Campbell signed to Capitol Records in the Sixties he was playing bluegrass instrumentals but he wanted to break away from that. check it out. That winning team of Glen Campbell, arranger and producer Al DeLory and some of the Sixties finest songwriters scored again with this terrific album, probably Glen Campbell's finest, from 1968.
